How to convert SVO files to AVI, depth or images sequence ?

SVO Files

The SVO file format is a proprietary format that can only be read from the ZED SDK and its tools.

It contains the unrectified images of the camera along with a few metadata like timestamps or IMU orientation (for ZED Mini). From these initial data, the SDK is able to simulate a live camera.

SVO is the only format available as a ZED SDK input, other video formats cannot be used with the SDK.

SVO Conversion

As an SVO file can be used to simulate a live camera, it can be converted in everything that the ZED SDK exports.

We gather all of the major formats in a dedicated sample named ZED_SVO_Export. It is available on GitHub and in the sample folder of the SDK:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\ZED SDK\samples\svo recording\export
  • /usr/local/zed/samples/svo recording/export

On windows, a pre-compiled version is available in C:\Program Files (x86)\ZED SDK\samples\bin\ZED_SVO_Export.exe. Linux user can follow the compilation information from the GitHub repository.

The sample is a command line tool, it needs to be used from a terminal as follow:

  1. Open a command line prompt.
    • Windows: Type "cmd" in the windows start menu and press Enter.
    • Linux: Hit Ctrl+Alt+t from your desktop
  2. Move to the folder containing the sample executable. (Type the following commands then press Enter)
    • Windows: cd C:/Program Files (x86)/ZED SDK/samples/bin
    • Linux: cd /path/to/your/build/directory
  3. Start the conversion with the desired parameters. (Type the following commands then press Enter)
    • Windows: ZED_SVO_Export.exe "C:/path/to/your/svo/file.svo" "C:/Users/YOUR-USER-NAME/Desktop/output.avi" 0
Please fill the path to your SVO file and your username.
    • Linux: ./ZED_SVO_Export "C:/path/to/your/svo/file.svo" "C:/Users/YOUR-USER-NAME/Desktop/output.avi" 0

Notice the number at the end of the command, it selects to conversion we want. Other modes are described in the documentation on the GitHub repository.

In this mode, you will find the corresponding AVI file on your desktop at the end of the conversion.

If you want to export any other data or format, don't hesitate to shape the sample to your own needs.
