Can I use GMSL2 cameras with Seeed Studio carrier boards and dev kits?

Native support

The StereoLabs GMSL2 cameras (ZED X, ZED X Mini, ZED X Nano, ZED X One GS, ZED X One S, and ZED X One 4K) require the ZED X Driver to work with an NVIDIA® Jetson™ platform. The driver includes the kernel modules and the device tree overlay that describe how the GMSL2 deserializers are wired to the Jetson™ CSI/MIPI interfaces, and this configuration is specific to each carrier board.

Seeed Studio carrier boards and dev kits (for example the reComputer series, such as the reComputer Mini J501) are third-party carrier boards and are not natively supported by the ZED X Driver. The list of platforms natively supported by StereoLabs is available on the ZED X Drivers page.

Drivers provided by Seeed Studio

Some ZED X Driver packages for Seeed Studio boards are built and distributed by Seeed Studio itself, for example through the Seeed Studio wiki. These packages, including their device tree overlays, are maintained by Seeed Studio.

If you experience issues with the GMSL2 cameras on a Seeed Studio board, such as:

• cameras listed by the ZED SDK as AVAILABLE but failing to open with CAMERA NOT DETECTED;

• cameras correctly probed by the driver but not delivering frames;

• capture timeouts on some GMSL2 ports;

please contact the Seeed Studio support team directly, providing your board model, the Jetson™ Linux (L4T) version, the driver package version, and the ZED SDK version, so they can provide a compatible and up-to-date driver package.

Access to the ZED X Driver source code

If you want to build and adapt the ZED X Driver for a third-party carrier board yourself, the driver source code is hosted in a private repository. Access can be granted after signing a mutual NDA with StereoLabs; please write to support@stereolabs.com to start the process.

Natively supported alternatives

For a ready-to-use GMSL2 setup with the ZED X Driver and the ZED SDK fully supported by StereoLabs, you can use:

• the ZED Box 2 Series and the other StereoLabs embedded PCs, with the ZED SDK preinstalled;

• the Mini Carrier Board, for integration into robots and machines where space and cost are critical;

• the ZED Link capture cards on the NVIDIA® Jetson™ developer kits supported by the ZED X Driver.
