Why isn't my ZED X working on ZED Box when I create a new user?
Last updated: October 22, 2026
Note: this guide applies to every GMSL2-enabled NVIDIA® Jetson™ device, not only to the ZED Box.
The GMSL2 cameras (ZED X, ZED X Mini, ZED X Nano, and ZED X One) require specific permissions to access the GMSL2 capture card and the camera devices. When you create a new user, you must add it to the required user groups.
Run the following commands from your existing administrator account (the default account already belongs to the sudo group; a newly created user does not, so it cannot run these commands itself).
Open a terminal console [Ctrl+Alt+T] and create the new user, replacing <username> with the name of the new account:
sudo adduser <username>
Add the new user to the required groups (the group list is comma-separated, followed by the user name):
sudo usermod -aG adm,i2c,tty,dialout,sudo,audio,video,gdm,zed <username>
Remove sudo from the list if the new user must not have administrator rights. You can verify the result with:
groups <username>
Reboot the device and log in with the new credentials to verify that the camera works correctly.
